Après huit ans (1969-1977) passé à Carrare en Italie (le centre mondial de marbre), ce sculpteur américain est retourné aux États-Unis où il a été artiste en résidence au New England Center for Contemporary Art. En 1979, il s'est installé à Paris. Il a découvert en 1984 le granit du Portugal qui est aujourd'hui son matériau de prédilection.
Il
a exposé entre autres à la Kunstmesse à Bâle, aux Foires Internationales de
Düsseldorf et de Cologne, à l'ARCO de Madrid, dans divers Salons à Paris
(Mai, Jeune Sculpture, Réalité Nouvelle, Artistes Décorateurs), au Muséum of
Modern Art de New York (prototype de harpe- sculpture), et dans de nombreuses
galeries dans le monde.
Ses œuvres figurent dans les collections permanentes du Palm Springs Desert Muséum (Californie), du New England Center for Contemporary Art (Connecticut), et plus de 230 collections privées dans le monde entier (ÉtatsUnis, France, Italie, Suisse, Israël, Allemagne, Portugal, etc ... ) .
En 1990, il réalisa une sculpture flottante en granit qui traversa librement le fleuve Douro à Porto.
En
1991, invité au Japon, il réalisa une sculpture monumentale pour le musée de
plein air de lwate-Machi.
Il a participé à l'exposition internationale "DIABASE - la pierre noire" au Centre Culturel Suédois à Paris en 1994.
Les œuvres de Richard Graham sont exposées à la Galerie Varnier, 4, rue des beaux-arts à Paris et à la Galerie Voutat à Genève.
Avec ses recherches sur le granit, son langage formel a pris une nouvelle orientation. Bien qu'il soit techniquement possible de produire les mêmes formes en marbre ou granit, il est persuadé que chacun de ces matériaux nécessite une approche différente.
Des sculptures comme "Flexible Granite" et
"Unexplained Relationship"
démontrent sa maîtrise de la délitation de la pierre cristalline.
"Parabolic Convention" est le résultat d'un travail sur les formes
géométriques et la richesse des textures de surface.
La Coopérative dos Pedreiros, le plus grand exportateur portugais de granit pour l'architecture, lui a ouvert ses dépôts et son usine, et offert la possibilité d'approfondir ses recherches.

Richard Graham has lived and worked in Dangeul (72260 France) since 1994.
After spending eight years (1969-1977) in Carrara, Italy (the world center for marble), this American sculptor returned to the United States, serving as artist-in-residence at the New England Center for Contemporary Art. In 1979, he moved to Paris. In 1984, during an international sculpture symposium, he discovered Portuguese granite, which is now his preferred material.
His work has been exhibited extensively, including at the international art fairs in Basel, Dusseldorf, Cologne, ARCO in Madrid, various Salons in Paris (Mai, Jeune Sculpture, Réalité Nouvelle, Artistes Décorateurs), the Museum of Modern Art in New York (prototype of a sculpted harp), and at galleries throughout the world.
His work is represented in the permanent collections of numerous museums and cities, as well as in more than 230 private collections worldwide (the U.S., France, Italy, Switzerland, Israel, Germany, Portugal, etc.).
In 1990, he created a granite sculpture which floated on its own across the Douro River in Oporto.
Invited to Japan in 1991, he created a monumental sculpture for the Open Air Museum of Iwate-Machi.
He participated in the international exhibition "DIABASE – the Black Stone" at the Swedish Cultural Center in Paris in 1994.
With his work in granite, his formal language took on a new direction. Although it is technically possible to produce the same forms in both marble and granite, he is convinced that each of these materials calls for a different approach.
Works such as "Flexible Granite" and "Unexplained Relationship" demonstrate his skill in splitting this crystalline stone. "Parabolic Convention" is the result of a focus on geometric shapes and the richness of surface textures.
The Cooperativa dos Pedreiros, the largest Portuguese exporter of granite for architectural use, allowed him to work in its stone depots and factory, giving him the opportunity to delve further into his creative search.
